Tolon District (Formerly Tolon/Kumbugu District) was craved out of the then Western Dagomba District in 1998.
The district shares borders with the West Mamprusi District to the north, West Gonja to the west and south and with the Salvelugu-Nanton District and Tamale Municipality to the east.

The Tolon District Assembly has the responsibility for the overall development of the district. In its bid to help transform the living conditions of the people, a lot of interventions have been made in the water, sanitation, education, health, local government and rural electrification.

Quite apart from the provision of development infrastructure in the above mentioned development areas, the district assembly has provided the needed congenial atmosphere including a serene environment for development to thrive.
