Tolon/Kumbugu District was craved out of the then Western Dagomba District in 1998. The district shares borders with the West Mamprusi District to the north, West Gonja to the west and south and with the Salvelugu-Nanton District and Tamale Municipality to the east.

The Tolon/Kumbugu District Assembly has the responsibility for the overall development of the district. In its bid to help transform the living conditions of the people, a lot of interventions have been made in the water, sanitation, education, health, local government and rural electrification.
